In februari 1999 we moved from a rented appartment to our own home
in Zoetermeer. Finally I'm able to improve things, without having to
undo it all upon exit (which is required for most rented houses in the Netherlands). Well, That I found out! The previous inhabitant also made his own improvements. Apperently there are multiple definitions of ‘improvement’. When in 1999 Bastiaan announced his arival, there was yet an other necessity to create an extra bedroom. Fase 1: Moving in:
Fase 2: The attic: The attic existed of two rooms, separated by a door. The front room had a kind of loft, 'accessable' by a step-ladder and a trapdoor in the ceiling. The back room contained no more than a few chests and wardrobes and a very old heater. The ceiling was made of sloping plastic 'planks'.
What we needed was two bedrooms, a small computer-room and room for a new heater, a washing-machine and drying-machine. We had already enough 'things' to justify a good, solid and accessable loft. This all meant: removing all old woodwork, building the new walls, making doors, aplying electricity, building the loft including stairs, plastering all walls, painting, leveling the floors and laying carpet. All this, working midst of a pile of 20 or 30 boxes with things for which we had 'no room to store them in'.... We did it! And it looks nice too. Fase 3: Front- and back-garden and the exterior: Next to the kitchen is a storage-room. It had soon filled with little bikes, larger bikes, rolerskates, little cars and all things kids 'need'.
Fase 4: We're not finished yet: The list of things to do still contains:
Fase X: ???: Well. Most of the wallpaint has to be redone soon. And the ceilings as well. I really should renew the two new garret-windows at the front-side of our house. Not to mention the parquet floor in the livingroom. A couple of years, maybe, but than I have to .... ............. |
